Heine ending service on INHF board
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Heine ending term of service on INHF board
DECORAH — Decorah resident Kirsten Heine is ending her term of service on the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation (INHF) board of directors after 17 years as an advisor and then board member for the nonprofit conservation organization.
Heine has used her love of northeast Iowa, her passion for conservation and her background in fundraising to support the mission of INHF, which is to protect and restore Iowa’s land, water and wildlife. During Heine’s tenure with the organization, INHF has protected more than 100,000 acres across Iowa, including thousands of acres in the Driftless region.
“Kirsten is so community-minded, and INHF has benefitted from her expertise, her connections in the community and her desire to see land preserved,” said INHF President Joe McGovern. “We are grateful for her service.”
Heine has been essential in INHF’s efforts to protect land along the Upper Iowa River, including a recent campaign to purchase Heritage Valley, a 1,200-acre nature preserve between Decorah and Waukon that includes a picturesque 3-mile stretch of river winding between the woodlands and hill prairies.
Heine’s family has also protected their own land along the Upper Iowa River with multiple conservation easements, permanently preserving land for wildlife habitat, water quality and scenic views.
“It truly has been a joy and honor to serve on the board of INHF and help to uplift its inspiring mission,” Heine said. “For my husband David and me, INHF is a deeply personal connection and passion. We believe in the impactful mission and vision — as it is “Good and True” and benefits all Iowans — and even more importantly it ensures that same benefit for the generations to come. This service has been most meaningful for me, and I look forward to continuing to be an ambassador and advocate for INHF.”
INHF board and staff will be in Decorah Oct. 26-27 for a celebration of a Forest Legacy program easement at Heritage Valley, an INHF donor reception and their board of directors meeting, which is held every other month in different locations around the state.
Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation is a nonprofit conservation group that works with private landowners and public partners to protect and restore Iowa’s land, water and wildlife. Since its founding in 1979, INHF has helped protect more than 195,000 acres of Iowa’s natural resources. Learn more at www.inhf.org

Your Place hosts Cheers for a Cure
On Thursday, June 15, from 5:00 PM – Close, Your Place bar in downtown Decorah will host Cheers for a Cure to help end Alzheimer’s and other dementia. Outside the bar will be a bake sale featuring sweet treats and salty snacks for attendees and the whole community. The family of Dale Putnam, longtime Decorah resident who recently died from Lewy Body Dementia, is partnering with Your Place to host the event.
“Dad decided to help future dementia patients very quickly after his diagnosis, participating in a clinical trial even though he knew he would never live to see the results, and ultimately donating his brain for more research,” said Brecka Putnam, Dale’s Daughter, “My sisters and I knew there would not be a cure in his lifetime, but we promised to do all we can to make sure there is one in ours. Helping fund research is the only way to make that happen.”
Brecka and sisters Shanna Putnam Dibble and Maddie Putnam will be bartending that evening and donating all tips to the Alzheimer’s Association. Shanna’s children, Putnam and Andi Dibble, have recruited additional family members to help them bake and staff the sweet treats and salty snack sale right outside of Your Place.
“We are incredibly thankful to Julie and Adam, the owners of Your Place, for their support of this important event, and the Alzheimer’s Association for their work towards finding a cure and supporting patients and caregivers,” said Brecka.
The Alzheimer’s Association leads the way to end Alzheimer’s and all other dementia – by accelerating global research, driving risk reduction and early detection, and maximizing quality care and support. Dale’s friends and family have raised over $50,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association to date.
For more information about the event, please contact brecka.putnam@gmail.com. For more information about the Alzheimer’s Association, please visit www.alz.org.

FORT ATKINSON PUBLIC LIBRARY RECEIVES NATIONAL GRANT FOR SMALL AND RURAL LIBRARIES
$20,000 Grant Will Help the Library Work with Residents with Disabilities to fully access the library.
Fort Atkinson — Fort Atkinson Public Library has been selected as one of 240 libraries to participate in Libraries Transforming Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities, an American Library Association (ALA) initiative that provides community engagement and accessibility resources to small and rural libraries to help them better serve people with disabilities.
The competitive award comes with a $20,000 grant that will help the library with capital improvements around its disabled access.
“We are so proud to be chosen for this amazing opportunity,” said Library Director Laura Thomas. “This grant will allow our library to get to know our residents with disabilities better. It will help us improve our services to ensure this population feels welcome and comfortable in our space.”
As part of the grant, Fort Atkinson Public Library staff will take an online course in how to lead conversations, a skill vital to library work today. Staff will then host a conversation with residents about accessibility and use the grant funds to replace the rear entrance, install electric door openers [and replace the existing ramp].
Accessibility is vital to the use of library services, and with limited access means limited use. “It’s often difficult to use the rear entrance to the library and we want to improve that so that all of our patrons are able to access the library and its resources,” said Thomas.
If you are interested in getting involved or taking part in the conversation, please contact Laura Thomas at 563-534-222, webmaster@fortatkinson.lib.ia.us or visit www.fortatkinson.lib.ia.us for more information.
Since 2014, ALA’s Libraries Transforming Communities initiative has re-imagined the role libraries play in supporting communities. Libraries of all types have utilized free dialogue and deliberation training and resources to lead community and campus forums; take part in anti-violence activities; provide a space for residents to come together and discuss challenging topics; and have productive conversations with civic leaders, library trustees and staff.
“Libraries Transforming Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities is an initiative of the American Library Association (ALA) in collaboration with the Association for Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL).”
Fort Atkinson Public Library is a rural library located in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. It was established in 1964 to serve Fort Atkinson and the surrounding area. It provides a variety of services to patrons of all ages and abilities. For more information, see our website at www.fortatkinson.lib.ia.us.

Local Band Members Reunite After 45 Years to Benefit the VMH Health Care Foundation
Original members of three local bands will be reuniting on Friday evening of Mother’s Day Weekend, May 12, for one night in downtown Waukon. This benefit event features a reunion of 11 mostly local musicians, two of whom played together 45 years ago in a number of area bands including Rising Sun, Horizon and Jackson Junction.
Many of the returning musicians are from Waukon including brothers Bill Withers, Jim Withers, John Withers, along with Gary Hesla, Bob Bechtel, Dave Dougherty, Brad Prestemon, Todd Pickett and Joel Anderson. They will be joined by Keel Clemmens and Jamey Lideen, longtime band members over the years. Of the original 12 musicians, the late Pat Dougherty, will also be remembered during the event, with his brother Dave joining the band at times throughout the evening.
This reunited band is now known as “Bandmates, Brothers and Friends” or “BBF”. The event will take place at Goodfella’s in downtown Waukon from 6-10 p.m. on Friday, May 12. Attendees will hear songs from the 50’s through the 90’s, both country and rock, from classic bands and individual artists like Elvis, the Beatles and Alabama, to name a few.
“These three bands have played hundreds of venues over four decades, across the tri-state area; however, our base was always northeast Iowa. This will be the first time we have all been together at one event,” states Bill Withers, event coordinator. “We wanted to return to our roots, donating our time and event proceeds. We chose the Veterans Memorial Hospital Health Care Foundation as our beneficiary as part of their recent conversion to county ownership. We hope everyone will save the date and look forward to an amazing night of memories and great music.”
Free-will donations will be accepted at the door and on-line.
